Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The term information structure refers to the grammatical (including intonational) structuring of an utterance into parts like focus/background, topic/comment etc. In this class we will discuss and critically review recent approaches to the question of how these categories are represented syntactically, and how they are interpreted semantically/pragmatically.
Assessment and permitted materials
Active participation, presentations, final paper; critical review of one or several of the approaches discussed.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Overview of recent contributions to the topic. To develop skills in understading and critically reviewing research contributions.
Examination topics
Readings will be assigned on a weekly basis; participants will prepare and present readings.
