Aims, contents and method of the course

Overview ot the history and development of the Indo-European languages.
Outline of the main features of the branches of Indo-European (Anatolian, Tocharian, Indic, Iranian, Albanian, Armenian, Greek, Italic, Celtic, Germanic, Baltic, Slavic).
Method of comparative grammar and etymology.

Assessment and permitted materials

Written examination at the end of term.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

For students of Indo-European linguistics: Preparation for advanced and specialised courses in particular Indo-European languages and main topics of Indo-European grammar.
For students of other fields: Assessment of historical pivots in linguistic study and methodological principles of comparative linguistics.

Examination topics

Structured presentation with multimedial components.
