Aims, contents and method of the course

The course gives an overview of the historical, social and political background of the music theater in the Baltic countries (Finland, Sweden, Germany, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Russia) during the centuries and concentrates then on the changes of the aesthetic paradigms.

Assessment and permitted materials

Discussing the articles and books; essay (6000-9000 characters with spaces)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

- to provide a framework that supports the basic knowledge about the music theater
- to understand international processes in the music theatre
- to give a basis for working in a theater/opera house
- to develop the interdisciplinary thinking and to shape knowledge of current practices in the music theater and in the arts

Examination topics

- lecture and seminar combined; individual reading and discussing problems; DVD-examples, CD-examples
