Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The aim of the course is to give a first comprehensive overview of the history of the cinema landscape in Vienna from its beginnings in 1896 to the present day - and thus to give an impression of the vividness and richness of facets of the "Kinostadt Wien" between approx. 1900 and 1980, not in terms of film, but explicitly in terms of cinema history: as lively cultural city and district locations, institutions, operative structures, as architectural spaces and much more. In addition to lectures, there will be discussions with experts, excursions to cinemas, theatres, exhibitions, a film screening, and concluding research by students in MA 8.

Assessment and permitted materials

- active participation (discussion, questions, excursions)
- independent research of at least 1 cinema of your choice on the basis of the data stock in MA 8 for "Vienna Wiki" and presentation of the results (oral, written)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

See above "Art der Leistungskontrolle".
Please note: Since the seminar will take place in the seminar room only a few times, it is important that the participants can take part in the excursions - some of them longer, some of them in the evening. It is also essential for the successful completion of the seminar that the participants independently research at least one cinema in detail in the MA 8 archive (accompanied by the seminar leader) and present the results orally or in writing (ideally: directly on the Vienna Wiki).
In case of absence for more than 2 dates, an evaluation is not possible in the case of this seminar.

Examination topics

Cinemas in Vienna from 1900 until today.
