Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Content

This course is addressed to students with a special interest for the practical transposition of theatrical texts on a theater-stage.
The course evolves around all those creative processes of thought and perception that precede every theater-production. How do ideas for space, setting and style come into existence? Which possibilities and what restrictions does the classical picture-frame stage offer? How do we proceed from the actual play to the design model and eventually to the completed stage set? And what prospects does digital technology offer today to amplify classical theatrical spaces?
The students will choose from a variety of plays that are currently produced at the Burgtheater Vienna. These plays will be thoroughly analyzed in a collective effort. Possible plays include “Die Jagdgesellschaft” by Thomas Bernhard, “The Welkin” by Lucy Kirkwood, “Mein Kampf” by George Tabori, “The Trojan Women” by Euripides and “Ode” by Thomas Melle. Subsequently the students will devise artistic concepts for the implementation of the play with a special focus on space and décor.

GOALS

Theater is - among others - an art of space. The course aims to approximate chances and difficulties of contemporary stage design to the students with a special focus on drama. This will be achieved by practical exercise accompanied by scientific commentary. In addition the course will look at the production chain of set designs in a theater. Key personal like the technical director will be introduced to the course.

METHODS

The visiting lecturer is working as a dramaturg at the Burgtheater in Vienna. The central point of the course is the collective and critical discussion of the readings and the evolving artistic concepts. The students will become acquainted with stage designers who are currently working at the Burgtheater and will get insight in their methods of work along concrete projects they are developing.

Assessment and permitted materials

The grade will be made up of three different items.

* Presentation (40%) - In a twenty minute presentation the student or a group of two present an artistic concept for a stage design. This can be done with the help of sketches, images and moodboards, or mere description. The rest of the group schools itself in feedback and critique to enhance the project.

* 3 reading cards (20%). In preparation for three of the sessions the students will write a 1-2 page thesis in which they share their ideas and observations concerning what the text suggest for a room or stage design

* Construction of a set design model on the basis of the prior presentation, accompanied by a scientific exemplification (40%)- The exemplification should have a length of about eight pages. Alle design models will be presented in our last session on the 29th of January. The thesis can be filed subsequently until the 15th of may.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

For a positive evaluation of the course the participants have to fulfill all three items of work.
