This seminar explores current forms of queer_feminist visual activism in film and the performative arts and offers the opportunity to examine how art practices articulate concerns, critique, traverse norms, and imagine redeeming utopias. Body practices such as drag, strategies such as humor and disidentification (Muñoz), but also the demonstration of vulnerability as a practice of weak resistance (Majewska), affective aesthetics (Cvetkovic) and materialities all play an equal role. Those artistic positions can be described as queer_feminist since they are directed against various forms of inequality and injustice to which subjects are exposed on the basis of their gender, sexuality, appearance and ethnic attributions. They examine the interrelationships of, among other things, sexism and racism and their social and individual effects, question power structures and norms, intervene in dichotomies and try to break them. But what exactly are contemporary artistic strategies, forms and aesthetics of criticism, resistance and revolt?
We will first explore (feminist) protest strategies and clarify what can be understood as resistance. Works by various artists such as Cassils, Sonia Khurana, Julischka Stengele and films by Shu Lea Cheang and Julia Fuhr Mann, among others, will serve as a basis for discussion and analysis. How can we define contemporary queer_feminist aesthetics between digital and analogue space? How can discrimination be subversively broken down and normative concepts be questioned through artistic but also cinematic and media practices and aesthetics? What role does the body play in this process with all its evaluations and norms regarding gender, race and ability, among other things? To answer these questions, we will read texts, watch films and invite guests. The seminar will therefore be composed of synochronous and asychronous teaching and learning formats.
Subsequently, a queer_feminist glossary of resistance will be created, in which all we have learned will be collected and presented and supplemented by new queer_feminist aesthetics.Prior knowledge:
The seminar will be held in German. The ability and willingness to read English and German texts is needed. Basic knowledge of feminist and queer theories and questions is an advantage.Aims:
Introduction to the construction, normalization and hierarchization of gender and bodies using film and the performative arts. Introduction to (queer) feminist aesthetics, resistance theories and practices. Gainng awareness to the power of images, re/presentations, speech acts and discourses. Methods:
The seminar will be composed of synochronous and asychronous teaching and learning formats. Literature and analysis examples will be provided via Moodle.
