Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The tasks of dramaturges have changed rapidly in recent years. While the job description was mainly characterized by text reading and text production, conceptual activities are now in the foreground. Placement is extremely important, both within production and institutionally.
Dramaturges now work mainly at the interface of different areas of competence in theatre and often across genres: theatre, dance, performance, visual arts and film.
This course is intended to offer students the opportunity to get to know the basics of the fields of activity and tasks of a contemporary dramaturgy and to gain insights into the production and funding conditions of the Viennese theatre landscape.

Contemporary dramaturgy is characterized by the fact that it has developed from the former pure advocacy of the texts of absent authors to diverse fields of activity at the interface of other areas in theater. These include programming, production management, ensemble constellations, marketing, law and mediation. In this course, students gain knowledge about the complexity of subsidized theatre work.
