Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

How does a theatre company work? What are the different forms (especially in German-speaking countries)? Theatre is a business that as an organisational form often does not live up to what it states and demands on the basis of its aesthetic productions. Based on current theatre discourses and forms, current theatre structures will be examined for their future viability. Furthermore, cultural and socio-political questions are to be included in the structural analysis.
The aim of the course is, on the one hand, to provide an overview of different structures of theatre companies with a focus on the German-speaking countries in the 20th and 21st centuries with reference to earlier forms of organisation and an excursion to the UK. On the other hand, new, sustainable structures are to be devised, which will be put up for discussion and examined in the joint discussion. At the end of the course, a plenum is formed that is modelled on a theatre company. In a role play, the students develop and review their theatre company of the future.
Through the dialogue between theory and practice, the course is to become a living laboratory that is fed by empiricism as well as qualitative knowledge transfer. In addition, three experts (from the fields of artistic management, interest groups and cultural policy) will be invited for discussions. Joint discussions will complement the debate; the role play will be the finale.
