Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Gregory Markopoulos was an anomaly in the development in the American
avant-garde film tradition. In 1967 he left the US with Robert
Beavers and moved to Greece. In addition to leaving America for Europe he
removed all of his films from circulation and prohibited them from being
exhibited. The Austrian Film Museum was Markopoulos' first and most
significant supporter and for that reason contains in its archive the
largest and most complete collection of his films. This course
will be structured around a 2 week retrospective of films by Markopoulos
at the Austrian Film Museum from mid to late November. Robert Beavers will be
present at the retrospective and will provide insight into this significant and influential period in both American and European avant-garde film history.

Assessment and permitted materials

Students will be required to submit 3 short critical response papers (2
pages) to selected texts and/ or films during the semester. Additionally a
longer (8 - 10 pages) final research paper will be required at the end of
the semester. Attendance at special events during the Markopolous
retrospective are mandatory and will be required of all enrolled students.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The films of Gregory J. Markopolous have been out of circulation since
1967. Since that time they have only been exhibited during a series of
events occurring only once every few years at a remote location in Greece. Participants of the course will have a rare and exclusive opportunity to see these films properly exhibited over the course of the two week retrospective. The time before and after the
event will be spent with an overview of the text edited by Mark Webber, Film As Film: The Collected Writings of Gregory J. Markopoulos

Examination topics

Participants in the course will be required to attend a series of 7 – 8
events at the Austrian Film Museum during the Markopolous retrospective.
During these events they will be introduced to the film material we will
examine under the best possible circumstances. Furthermore, given the
obscurity of these films and the lack of any acceptable digital version,
it will be for many the first and only chance they will have to see this
material. In addition to these events there will be 7 – 8 1 and 1/2 hour lectures.
The lectures will begin prior to the retrospective and continue until the
end of the semester. During these lectures we will examine the Mark Webber
collection of writings by Markopolous and analyze the relationship between
these texts and the films seen.
