Aims, contents and method of the course

From Petrarca’s chosen solitude as removed from performance of the self to Rousseau’s celebration of nature, from Castiglione’s diplomatic positionings to the stilted body of opera seria, from the natural poses of Chdowiecki to the the 20th century European reception of non-European strategies of theatrical artfulness: the question of authenticity is asked time and again in the context of theatre and theatre reception – and is given different answers, depending on place and time: as theatre, through theatre, against theatre.
The class, taking as starting points the complex shifting periods of the Early Modern Age and the 18th century, discusses different concepts of authenticity and their coding in relation to theatre.

The class will offer summaries in English to accomodate non-German speakers.

Assessment and permitted materials

participation in class beyond physical presence

+ individual written effort (essay, paper, excerpt, statement)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Discussion of central designs of authenticity in regards to theatre (nature, body, non-theatre, the doctrine classique).
Confronting concepts of subjectivity and the historization of cultures of affection.

Examination topics

reading, analysis, debate/discussion.
