Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
No prior subject knowledge is required to study this module. Good command of English is required.Attendance is compulsory. A maximum of two absences is permitted in order to pass the class. A third absence will result in a fail (negative mark).Course assessment:Course assessment will be done through:1) Assignment 1: one-pager on hygge – 20% of the mark
- Due: 12 November 2023.
- Prepare a one-pager on hygge: a concept describing a mood of coziness combined with the feelings of wellness and contentment.
- You should reflect on how this concept is represented in media.
- One-pager reflection is supposed to be in written form and must fit on one A4 page. These are loose notes and reflections that do not have a rigid form. They show your ability to reflect on the concept of hygge depicted in media.
- Your short analysis of the concept of hygge represented in media and the ability to communicate your own reflections will be assessed.2) Assignment 2: podcast episode – 40% of the mark
- Due: 17 December 2023.
- Imagine you are the host of a podcast called "(Self-)Care in Media." Your task for this assignment is to create a podcast episode – max. 5-minute-long audio recording – where you will critically analyze one media text (for example, a film, TV series, TV show of your choice) using a theory or a concept you learned during the course.
- Please embed the recording into the Power Point presentation, if you wish to use some illustrative material for your audio recording, however, it is not mandatory.
- Do not exceed the 5-minute recording time.
- Follow the guidelines outlined above and keep your argument clear.3) Presentation in the classroom – 40% of the mark
- In the penultimate or last class, students will deliver an oral presentation that they have worked on in groups during the semester. The presentation should be made in Power Point or a similar program.
- The presentation must focus on the selected case study on the topic of "Self-Care Media."
- The selected case study must be a broader media phenomenon, not a single media text (i.e., not a single film).
- Choose a case study not discussed in details during the course.
- In the presentation, answer the following questions: 1) How do you understand the concept of "self-care media"?; 2) How does your case study fit into this category?
- Presentations need to be done in groups.
- Max. 15 minutes per presentation.
- The presentation will be assessed in terms of the quality of the content (research, argumentation) and the way it is presented (adherence to the time limit, participation of all group members during the presentation, involvement of group members in answering the questions posed after the presentation).

What is "care"? What is "self-care"? How are they represented in film and media? The COVID crisis has intensified global attention on individual health for billions of people. There is no doubt that for the past years, the topics of health and (self-)care have dominated national and international media discourses. They have made clear how crucial it is for people to have strong immunity and health, and also to practice (self-)care in various forms. "Self-care" – defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as "the ability to promote health, prevent disease, maintain health and cope with illness and disability with or without the support of a healthcare provider" – gives people the possibility to protect their own health both proactively and reactively, employing everything from nose sprays against allergies to sleep-management smartphone apps and ASMR videos used to assist in maintaining the desired level of well-being. During the course we will inspect how (self-)care practices are portrayed in film and media. We will analyze film and media representations of the (self-)care activities and attempt to characterize the growing trend for wellness experiences in media. We will check how the concepts of (self-)care can be approached using various philosophical and cultural theories, for example, affect theory. Finally, we will seek to answer the question of whether we might already be speaking of a specific group of media creations called "self-care media" or "self-soothing media."Course aims:
Upon successful completion of this course, students will:
- Have developed skills in film and other media texts analysis and interpretation, in particular, regarding the depictions of the (self-)care practices and experiences.
- Have developed their ability to discuss films and other media texts in a written and oral form (oral presentations, discussions, one-pager).
- Get familiarized with the selected theories of affect and the representations of (self-)care practices in selected media texts.
- Have experience in critical analysis of films and other media texts using selected theoretical approaches.Course methods:
The course is taught through lectures, screenings, discussions, and set readings. Classes will consist of introductory lecture, a group work and a discussion part on films and other media texts. Individual sequences, scenes and images will be analyzed. Set readings will be discussed. For each session, students are expected to come prepared, meaning, to read the required set readings and to watch films or other audiovisual materials specified by the teacher, and participate in class discussions about the texts they read and the audiovisual materials they watched. The aim is to build students’ critical thinking skills and to show them how to analyze and interpret the representations of (self-)care practices in film and media.
