Aims, contents and method of the course

CONTENTS

Who does not know the feeling that everything has been there before? Every new work of art, every new song, every new story - all just dull repetition. With a finite alphabet, one day everything is actually put down on paper.

Jorge Luis Borges provided a thought experiment: in his text "The Library of Babel" he dreamed of a fictional library with more books in the cupboards than atoms in the visible universe. The books contain every imaginable combination of letters from an alphabet of 25 characters. So there is every book that has been written, and every book that will be written.

Borges' vision has now been programmed on the Internet. On the website libraryofbabel.info, if you click long enough, the next novel of the century appears. But a human life is probably not enough for this discovery.

The library of mankind is filling up anyway: in 2010 Google counted more than 130 million books in this world. Since then, two million printed works have been added every year. With self-published books, the figure is three million. Then there are half a billion printed newspapers and half a billion tweets - day after day.

What more can you add to that? And in the age of Netflix and HBO, are there still readers for all these texts?

METHOD & STRUCTURE

The course offers the opportunity to develop your own literary project. At the beginning of the semester, texts are read which serve as orientation. A leitmotif is also agreed upon.

OBJECTIVES

What are the issues of our time? What are innovative forms of literature? What actually is good literature and who determines it? What is the future of the theatre? Can one live from writing and if so, how badly? Considering the limits of this course, a first insight into the happiness and unhappiness of writing will be given.

Assessment and permitted materials

IMMANENT EXAMINATION

Presence, active participation, research diary, development and advancement of the literary project (main service)

FORM

Form and scope of the literary project: ± 5000 characters. Plays, prose, poetry.

Form of the research diary: a digital notebook from which the working method can be seen. In addition, short summaries and thoughts for compulsory reading. In addition: ideas, rejections, visions and spinning.

Form of the LV: During the block seminar we will discuss the texts in plenary. With the feedback the authors should have the possibility to rethink their texts. At the end the texts will be presented in a reading.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

MINIMUM REQUIREMENT

Physical and mental presence. Active cooperation. Independent writing of texts. Committed group work. Readiness for writing, reading, editing, experimenting. This course is a writing workshop that lives from courage and criticism. The texts are read and discussed in plenary.

Quality and development of the literary project: 34%.
Presentation and participation: 33%
