Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Thomas' treatise De ente et essentiel (On being and essence) is considered as one of the most important works of ontology, that is, the theory concerning what being is. Not every being exists in the same way. A specific color or a specific weight can be seen on a given subject, but not independent of it. A subject can exist without being bound to a specific color or weight, although a certain color and weight is necessary for its existence. The question is then what is essential in a thing, what makes it the thing it is. Thomas aims to explain to his fellow monks (ad fratres socios) the fundamental concepts of Aristotelian ontology and by doing that he draws also on christian Theologians and Arabic Philosophers such as Avicenna and Averroes. In the seminar we will focus much on the historical background of Thomas' work, that is, on Aristotle, Augustin and Avicenna.
