Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Since the 17th century, interpretations of Descartes's philosophy have been characterized by widely differing opinions and positions. Structured around a precise reading of the Meditations and the Discourse on Method, this seminar will delve into the broad philosophical and cultural context of Descartes's philosophy, tracing trajectories of his thought as they continue into the present.
Each course will begin with a reading of the Meditations, at the same time both investigating Descartes's own intellectual context and following the immediate implications of his philosophy, reading first excerpts from Augustine, Sextus Empiricus, Galileo Galilei, Ignatius von Loyola, Michel de Montaigne and Francisco Suárez, and then finally Blaise Pascal, Isaac Newton, David Hume and Immanuel Kant.

Assessment and permitted materials

Active participation throughout the course and two short papers (5 to 10 pages and 1 to 2 pages).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Knowledge of general ideas and problems of Descartes's philosophy.
Overview of relevant developments in cultural history between the 16th and 18th centuries.

Examination topics

Students will write their own "meditations". The goal of this exercise is to explore the many possible forms of philosophical writing. What is the difference between a philosophical and a literary work? What is the difference between primary and secondary literature? What are the different methods of linking research and writing?
