The lecture course gives on overview over some central themes and problems of analytic epistemology: (1) Definitions of knowledge, (2) sources of knowledge (perception, reasoning, memory, testimony), (3) forms of epistemic justification (internalism, externalism), (4) epistemic scepticism, (5) epistemic virtues, (6) epistemic naturalism, (7) modal epistemology, (8) contextualism.

Aims, contents and method of the course

The lecture course gives on overview over some central themes and problems of analytic epistemology: (1) Definitions of knowledge, (2) sources of knowledge (perception, reasoning, memory, testimony), (3) forms of epistemic justification (internalism, externalism), (4) epistemic scepticism, (5) epistemic virtues, (6) epistemic naturalism, (7) modal epistemology, (8) contextualism.

Assessment and permitted materials

Written exam or three short essays (of about 12 pages each) on three different themes of the lectures.

Understanding basic problems of epistemology

Examination topics

Lectures and independent study of texts discussed in the lectures. (See the anthology of Sosa, Fantl and McGrath.)
