Aims, contents and method of the course
Content: The seminar will provide to the interested students an introduction in the philosophy of science. The course will give an overview of classical authors as well as new texts and debates of the discipline. Central to the course will be the reading and the discussion of some central papers in philosophy of science: from Carnap and Popper to Kuhn and texts on scientific realism. Central concepts of the discipline (causality, explanation, reduction and pluralism, experiment and confirmation) will be discussed with the help of central texts about these concepts. The aim of the course is to familiarize students with central concepts and debates in philosophy of science. An eagerness to read and discuss as well as active participation will be essential for the course.Aims: An introduction into central problems, debates and texts in philosophy of science.Methode: Reading and discussion of the texts. In each unit of the course two texts on a central topic of the discipline will be briefly presented by students, and will then be discussed in the group.
Assessment and permitted materials
Regular and acrtive participation, reading of the texts (approx. 40 pages per unit), short presentation by each student of one or two texts (10 min.). Final paper at the end of the seminar (20 pages).
