Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The Islamic philosophy is based on revelation and traditions of its religion and has been subjected to a process of further development since the era of foundation of the Islam. By the time (Islamic) ethics and (Islamic) aesthetics were formed, which had obvious influence on the so-called art of Islam. The Islamic principle of "Ultra-monotheism", i.e. the uniqueness of God, is visible in ethical and aesthetic concepts. This fact dominates the concept of banned polytheism and was instrumental in the development of the aniconism in Islam (ban of images), which in fact was an important factor in the further evolution of art and related culture. The concept of ethics in Islam, understood as a ongoing search for the good and God, is as well important for the development of art as for the questions of Islamic aesthetics focused on the vitality of art works and the questions on spatially aesthetics. The search for the good is therefore inextricably linked to the questions of aesthetics, because the artificial creator in Islamic philosophy can only be identified as the God; the aesthetics, vitality and the beauty depend linguistically and philosophically on God. Paradigmatic, the term for an artist is "Mussauwir", which is completely, as far as linguistics and philosophy is concerned, linked to the nature of God. Is this the source for aniconism in Islam, i.e. the ban of images in Islam? What is the fundamental relationship in Islam between aniconism and banned polytheism? How affected is the concept of aniconism in Islam by contemporary media (internet, photography, cinema etc.)?
