Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This is a course in social / political philosophy of language. We will investigate the political-social dimension of language and speech. We will focus on the following questions: What is language, what are speech acts? What is discrimination? How is power enacted in speech? How does discrimination in speech work? What is sexist speech, what is racist speech? What is hate speech? Is hate speech the same as discriminatory speech? How can speech be empowering for members of marginalized groups? What may linguistic and ideological resistance look like? How can discrimination in speech be countered? How can we speak in non-discriminatory ways? What may an ethics of language be?
