Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Bi-lingual lecture: German-English (on site in physical presence)

In this lecture, we will philosophically analyze Sri Aurobindo Ghose's Integral Yoga and relate it to the yoga-practice that Aurobindo himself bodily developed, mainly during his time in Puducherry and recorded and analyzed in his notes “Record of Yoga” (Complete Edition Volumes 10 and 11). Since Aurobindo developed his Sādhana (yoga practice) in close examination of different traditions of Indian yoga, his Records of Yoga also give us deep insights into other yoga practices (bhakti yoga, raja yoga, karma yoga, tantrism), which he integrates into his integral yoga, but from which he also clearly distinguishes himself in some cases. The lecture therefore also aims to elucidate the relationship between yoga philosophy and yoga practice using this example.
In addition to the original reading of Aurobindo's “Records on Yoga”, we will also read the excellent interpretation of these records by Debashish Banerji “Seven Quarters of Becoming”, in which he regularly relates Aurobindo's records of his yoga practice to the canon of European philosophy, especially to the writings of Michel Foucault and Gilles Deleuze.
In this respect, my lecture performs a practice of translation in which we will constantly move back and forth between the European and Southeast Asian traditions of philosophizing.
