Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Recent conceptions of Virtue Ethics contend that theories in which morality is based upon principles and duties lack concreteness, and refer to Aristotle's understanding of virtue rather than to Kant's practical philosophy. Against this backdrop, the lecture reconstructs Kan's doctine of virtue and discusses whether, or in which ways, this conception might prove relevant for moral orientation today. The focus will be on the difference between legal and moral duties and on notions such as: ethics, maxim, perfection, happiness, conscience, friendship, religion.
