Aims, contents and method of the course

The Analects of Confucius (Lun Yu) is one of the basic texts of the Chinese civilisation. It shaped during 2000 years the every day life and the behaviour of all parts of the Chinese society, especially the conception of a good government. The main purpose of this seminar is to work out the methodical foundation of the Confucian way of thinking. It shall be demonstrated that this text contains a line of thought of highest philosophical quality, which is worth wile to be compared with the best texts of our tradition in the past and present time.
As basis for reading we use the translation of Richard Wilhelm, Fischer Taschenbuch Nr. 90076, 2008.
In addition, passages from the important Confucian text zhong yong (doctrine of the mean) are discussed.
The Chinese texts for important parts will be delivered be the leader of the seminar. Any knowledge of the Chinese language is not necessary.

Assessment and permitted materials

Marks on the basis of the lectures. Lectures in written form are possible.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Important parts of the German translation by Richard Wilhwlm will be reported and commented. Difficult parts of the text will be compared with the Chinese text. Knowledge of the Chinese language is not necessary

Examination topics

Lectures of the participants dealing with the texts. Discussion of the lectures.
