Aims, contents and method of the course

Mittelpunkt dieses Seminars ist die Auseinandersetzung mit dem Geschichtsbegriff, dem Historismus, und dem anti-Historismus im jüdischen Denken des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts. Das Seminar besteht aus einer generellen Einführung in jüdisches Geschichtsdenken im Zusammenhang mit Tradition, Erinnerung, und Heilsgeschichte, und setzt den Schwerpunkt auf philosophische Geschichtskritik und außergeschichtliche Modelle in Hermann Cohen, Franz Rozenzweig, Isaac Breuer, und anderen jüdischen Denkern. Einflüsse aus der allgemeinen Philosophie und von christlichen Denkern werden ebenfalls beleuchtet.

Einführungswissen in jüdischer Geschichte und Kultur. Das Seminar ist zugänglich für Studenten aus der Judaistik, Philosophie, Historik, Religionswissenschaft, Germanistik und ähnlichen Fachbereichen

Darstellung des modernen jüdischen Denkens als entscheidend geprägt durch seine kritische Auseinandersetzung mit dem Geschichtsbegriff

Examination topics

Einführende Vorlesungen. Kritische Auseinandersetzung mit Primärquellen und Sekundärtexten. Kurzreferate durch Seminarteilnehmer.

History, Meta-History, Counter-History in Modern Jewish Thought

The seminar will focus on concepts of history, historicism, and anti-Historicism in 19th and 20th century Jewish thought. It will begin with a general introduction to Jewish notions of history in relation to tradition, memory, and sacred history, and will then explore Jewish philosophical approaches to history and meta-historical models in thinkers such as Hermann Cohen, Franz Rosenzweig, Isaac Breuer, Abraham Joshua Heschel, and others. Attention will also be given to select Christian thinkers.

Prerequisites:

Basic knowledge in Jewish history and culture. The seminar is open to students of Judaic studies, philosophy, history, religious studies, German studies, and cognate fields.

Presentation of research synopsis
Research paper on graduate level (i.e. near publishable work)
