Aims, contents and method of the course

Attention: "An important element of this course is the connection to practical contexts, these refer to online teaching/learning relationships and - if possible and desired - the real accompaniment of (multilingual) students in the UniClub of the Children's Office of the University of Vienna (workload 1 ECTS)".

The aim of this course is to deal with the possibilities of trauma-sensitive approaches and - closely related to this - to question the responsibility of the teacher. The seminar is not only aimed at student teachers, but at all those who are interested in dealing with traumatic experiences in a sensitive and reflective way. We will work primarily with the text "Plantation Memories" by Grada Kilomba, but we will also use descriptions from Leslie Feinberg's "Transgender Warriors" as a basis for exchange in the seminar.

Before registering for the seminar, I ask all those interested to ask themselves about their own ability to read and talk about violent passages. For, although no violence is to be produced in the seminar, it is difficult to talk about dealing with traumatic experiences if one does not name the dimension of the suffering experienced and re-experienced.
The seminar will be primarily about a dialogue between all those present and will also offer the opportunity to talk about examples of traumatization that go beyond those addressed by the texts of colonialism, racism and transphobia. Because, first of all, it must be said that there can be no guide in the sense of a one-to-one instruction for the trauma-sensitive handling and the responsibility of the teacher.

Assessment and permitted materials

The completion of two sub-assignments on understanding trauma and the responsibilities of being a teacher (in the broadest sense) during the seminar. (4-6 pages each) For all student teachers, a final paper with reflection on the school situation (6 pages). For all others, a final paper with reflection on the university teaching situation (6 pages). Submissions during the semester will serve as preliminary work at best.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

In order to pass the course, it is necessary to hand in at least all texts on the agreed dates, to evaluate these texts as sufficient (4) and to attend the seminar consistently.
