Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
David Hume (1711-1776), according to Peter Gay "the most radical of radical philosophers" (Gay, The Enlightenment, 1973, 401f) is in the centre of this close reading of his famous /Enquiry concerning Human Understanding/ [1748]. The topics of his collection of essays range from theoretical philosophy (epistemology) to practical philosophy (freedom of will). We will also closely examine Hume's argument against the physico-theological proof of god and his criticism of miracle claims made by monotheistic religions. For these chapters we will also refer to his /Dialogues concerning Natural Religion/ [published posthumously in 1779].
Assessment and permitted materials
Regular attendance (max. 2 unexcused absences), written commentaries (uploaded to moodle by Sunday prior to the session), a short presentation of the topic under discussion, regular participation in the discussions.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
The students will learn to read a philosophical classic. Philosophical close reading differs from our everyday modes of reading newspapers, internet blogs or novels in that we are concerned to uncover the structure of an argument beneath the surface of the text.
Beyond that, this seminar will also be a training in the writing of philosophy. Understanding a philosophical text can be judged by one's ability to repeat - in one's own words - the philosophical argument.

Examination topics
Students will read and prepare one essay per week at home, short commentaries (1-2 pages) are to be written every week in advance. After a short presentation in the seminar we will together discuss the texts and re-read problematic passages. The primary texts will be available as photo-copies in the so-called "Handapparat" of the department's library.
