Aims, contents and method of the course
The Philosophy of Science Colloquium has two parts: lectures delivered by guest speakers and seminar meetings. This semester the topic is the history and philosophy of algebra in the 19th Century, with a special focus on the so-called Principle of Permanence of Forms, central to the foundational debates on the nature of mathematics.
Assessment and permitted materials
This is a discussion-based seminar, with minimal lecturing, focused on careful reading and rigorous understanding of philosophical texts.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Active participation in discussion (15%), seminar presentation (25%), and a term paper on a topic chosen in consultation with the instructor (60%). Detailed instructions for writing your paper will be given in the seminar.By registering for this course, you agree that the automated plagiarism checking software Turnitin will check all written submissions made by you in Moodle.All the evaluation components above are required for successfully completing this course. Only one unexcused absence is permitted.Grading scale:
