Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The students of the class will be introduced to the history of Greek language and will be acquainted with the Greek alphabet. Then we will plunge into philosophical terminology from all areas of ancient philosophy, such as ethics, logic, physics, metaphysics, psychology). We will also deal with some important grammatical phenomena. We will read short passages mainly from the Presocratics, from Plato and Aristotle and will discuss some of the philosophical concepts present in them. Students will also be introduced to the basic tools for the study of the Greek philosophical works, such as dictionaries, translations, and grammars.

Assessment and permitted materials

written exam (transcription of Greek words, commentary on philosophical terms, translation of short phrases)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

We will reach the point to read short philosophical texts with the grammar explained and the necessary vocabulary provided. The active participation of students will be encouraged.
