Aims, contents and method of the course

All texts to be discussed in the seminar will be made available in form of a reader. This seminar will examine seminal texts by Philippe Lacoue-Labarthe. Particular emphasis will be put on his readings of Hölderlin, Wagner, Freud, Heidegger, Celan, as well as on his Auseinandersetzungen with Theodor W. Adorno and Alain Badiou.

Assessment and permitted materials

In order to receive a grade for this seminar, students have to either give a presentation or write a paper. The presentation has to be 30 minutes long, and it has to be submitted in elaborated and written form to the instructor on the day of the presentation; moreover, each presenter has to provide a one-page summary of her/his presentation and distribute to all participants at the beginning of class. As to the paper, it has to be 20 pages long (1 1/2 spaces). The topic of the paper can be determined in consultation with the instructor.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The students in the seminar will have to perform close readings of the course material; the seminar will also provide students with the opportunity to hone both their presentation and writing skills.

Examination topics

The seminar will consist of presentations and class discussions.

The seminar participants will closely examine (excerpts from) the following texts by Lacoue-Labarthe: Typography; Heidegger, Art, Politics; "The Nazi Myth"; "The Jewish People Does Not Dream"; Poetry as Experience; Musica Ficta; Heidegger and the Politics of Poetry.
Recommended Secondary Literature: Andre Hirt, Un Homme litteral; John Martis, Philippe Lacoue-Labarthe; Alison Ross, The Aesthetic Paths of Philosophy; Martin Jörg Schäfer, Schmerz zum Mitsein; Erik M. Vogt, Ästhetisch-Politische Lektüren zum "Fall Wagner".
