Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The aim of the seminar is to reflect on the underlying principles of teaching philosophy, to gain confidence in planning philosophy lessons and to reflect on the consequences of the digitalization of school and society from different perspectives.
The point of departure for this seminar is to engage with the question of how teaching philosophy can be conceptualized and to discuss what makes a “good” philosophy class. This includes deliberating the necessities for planning teaching-units as well as the limits of preparation. Furthermore, students will practice the formulation of learning objectives and questions for student assignments, how to arrange so called joints between phases, as well as the selection of appropriate materials and how to justify the methodological organization and progress of a lesson unit, using adequate texts as a starting point. Finally, students will be required to present and discuss a coherent lesson plan (including lesson materials) from a lesson they created for their practicum teaching.
Depending on students’ interest, the deliberation of what makes “good” philosophy teaching can be followed by a reflection on the term philosophy itself, and what consequences the conceptualization of the term should have on defining methodological approaches to teaching philosophy in school. Alternatively, a more in depth examination of the methodological organization of lesson-units could be obtained, including general (interdisciplinary) teaching methods, different methods of text recognition (“Sentence-by-Sentence”, “Think-Pair-Share” etc.) as well as with I. Kant’s considerations on the function of examples in view of the formation of the mind and power of judgement.
The second part of the seminar focuses on examining the impacts of online teaching and learning, taking the personal experiences students have made thus far into consideration. The discussion should include a broader perspective, considering debates on societal impacts of digitalization. Furthermore, J. Baudrillards ideas for a digital society will be taken into consideration.
Throughout the course of the seminar, theoretical inputs on the part of the lecturer, group and pair work among the students as well as presentations and plenary discussions will take turns. Reading texts and writing short papers are mandatory. At the end of the seminar students will submit a paper in the form of a portfolio, which will include a written assignment on a theoretical concept discussed in the seminar and an individual teaching project
The seminar will be held as an online course. Depending on the thematic focus of each session, the course will be divided into different groups, in order to allow for in-depth discussions of the topics at hand.
