Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The seminar provides an introduction into the aesthetic thought of Jacques Ranciere; the main emphases are on the questions of literature and film. The seminar introduces into Ranciere's conception of the aesthetic regime of identifying the arts. In this context it will become evident in which ways Ranciere's conception of the aesthetic regime differs from the hegemonic conceptions of aesthetic modernism and postmodernism. His recourse to writings in the context of German idealism and of German romanticism is traced in light of the paradox that is central to the aesthetic regime and that maintains a simultaneous identity and non-identity between (modern) art and social life. In a next step, different texts by Ranciere on literature are analysed in order to demonstrate that the emergence of literature went hand in hand with the establishment of the aesthetic regime. texts on Flaubert and Mallarme are addressed, as well as texts in which Ranciere engages with certain readings by Sartre and Badiou. Finally, the last sections of the seminar are dedicated to the interrogation of some central texts by Ranciere on cinema. Directors such as Godard, Marker, Straub, and Costa are discussed in light of Ranciere's aesthetics.
The seminar will consist of presentations and class discussions. All texts to be discussed will be made available in form of a reader
