Aims, contents and method of the course

During the lab excursions students get to know research questions, topics, approaches and methods of the core disciplines of cognitive science as researched in different labs of the University of Vienna and Medical University of Vienna.

Learning Outcomes:
" Familiarity with individual researchers' questions and approaches
" Insight into the field and scientific culture of the core disciplines of cognitive science
" Insight how a particular way to pose a scientific question is related to the methodology chosen

Assessment and permitted materials

Assessment:
1.) active participation in 6 labs
2.) reports on the lab excursions:
Describing three lab excursions in 2-3 pages (approx. 5000 characters) each. The description should include the following:
a) description and reflection of the lab excursion and the research topics presented
b) a description of the research methods used in this lab
c) your stance on these research methods – Why you would find it interesting and benefit from doing a project in this lab
d) A mini-research-proposal (1 page)
You should propose/describe a research project (research question, methods, procedure, expected results), that could be realistically done in two years or shorter time. This part of the report is the major part and intellectual challenge of this assignment and should be 1 page.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

1.) attendance of at least 6 lab excursions (30 %)
2.) 3 lab reports, each 2-3 pages (approx. 5000 characters) (70%); will be assessed according to the criteria mentioned above.
