Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The seminar aims at clarifying the notoriously discussed relationship between religion and violence. It will be asked whether or not we can find an intrinsic relationship between religion and violence, whether or not "religious violence" is due to a temporarily misdirected interpretation of the narrative semantics of religious systems of knowledge, or if the relationship is constitutive but reactivated only under contingent conditions. In this context, a philosophical reflection shall help to overcome the oftentimes essentialist and/or reductionist ways we are dealing with the topic--a way that is not only characteristic of the way it is (mis)represented in the media but also in a variety of scientific fields that "hunt for causation." A specific focus will be on the gender dimension since we are bearing witness today to a proliferation of sexualized forms of religious violence that call for rigorous analysis, reflection and understanding.
