Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

I. Content
In this research seminar, we will discuss texts and topics from contemporary debates in metaphysics and ontology, especially (but not exclusively) with applications to social phenomena.

II. Method
The seminar is intended to illustrate philosophical research work in practice. For this purpose, the students should write the term paper in the style of an article that would be intended for submission to a peer-reviewed journal. In addition to weekly sessions (90 minutes each) in which we discuss reading material, there will be four workshops during the semester in which various aspects and phases of the publication process are explained.

III. Goals
The primary goal is to familiarize students with philosophical research and publication practice.
The secondary goal is to familiarize students with topics and methods from contemporary metaphysics.
The tertiary goal is to equip the students with a suitable background knowledge for the participation in the summer school "Social Ontology and Traditional Metaphysics". The summer school will take place in July and will be led by the renowned visiting scholar Karen Bennett from Rutgers University (more info: https://hamburgersommerkurs.wordpress.com/). Participation in the summer school is optional and will presumably give additional credit points.

Assessment and permitted materials

The examination grade consists of grades for two separate components. Both components must receive a pass (at least grade 4).

Component I:
Seminar paper (5,500-8,000 words) (85% of the final grade)

Component II:
Performance on the seminar topic OR Jeopardy OR reviewer work (15% of the final grade).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Requirements and stuff:

(i) The seminar takes place in English, the reading materials are English texts as well. It is a prerequisite therefore that students are willing (and able) to participate in discussions in English.

(ii) Students must be able and willing to engage with texts from contemporary analytic philosophy; some of the texts presuppose acquaintance with formal methods of philosophy (as they are taught, e.g., in an introduction to logic)

(iii) Participants must be willing to write an essay, present it and discuss it; this must be done during teaching time (March to June)

(iv) Attendance is required; unexcused absence is permitted twice for the seminar sessions and once for the workshops.

(v) Sessions have to prepared by answering a set of questions on the literature (6 times in the semester).

Examination topics
