Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Control, says Deleuze in his famous essay 'Postscript on Control Societies' from 1990, designates a form of power that developed in (European) societies subsequent to Foucault's disciplinary power, which it historically, logically, and programmatically replaces or at least complements. Besides Foucault, Deleuze also references William S. Burroughs as an essential figure for the elaboration of a post-disciplinary conception of power, which relevance couldn't be more evident in times of big data, AI, digital disinformation and propaganda, or neoliberal subjectivation. The course addresses the conception and phenomenon of control power first of all in considering its philosophical preconditions and foundations in Foucault, Burroughs, and Deleuze. Following this, we will explore three associated topics in the recent literature (technology, capitalism, racism and coloniality) in which control or control power plays a central role.

Didactical methods
- formulation of 2 questions on the literature by students (at least 5 times per semester, to be submitted 2 days prior to the respective session, upload on moodle)
- approx. 15 minutes introduction by the lecturers on the respective literature (philosophical-historical contextualiziation of the text, author's background, formulation of questions for the discussion)
- open discussion on the literature (in groups and/or open plenum), moderated by lecturers
- group discussions
- assistence and guidance with the development of written papers, including discussion of emerging problems with finding a topic, structuring of scientific papers and research of additional sources etc.
