Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The distinction between ‚legality' and ‚legitimacy' is considered to be crucial for assessing the moral status of claims to power and political authority. Not all forms of government are considered to be legitimate though they have de facto authority to enact laws.
However, what are the exact criteria of political legitimacy? When are state orders legitimate, when illegitimate? How should we define the relationship between legitimacy and justice? Which conception of legitimacy is relevant for a global political order?
In the seminar we will read texts by Th. Nagel, Allan Buchanan, Joseph Raz and David Copp to discuss the outlined questions.
