Aims, contents and method of the course

In Kierkegaard’s critique of irony the aesthete is a figuration for the undecided attitude towards life, since the aesthete reflects on the possibilities of existence without making a decision for reality. Taking this critique as a point of departure, Kierkegaard was the first philosopher to posit a (negative) aesthetic that fulfills the requirement of the search for an authentic existence not only in the ethic, but rather already in the aesthetic realm. Thus, such an aesthetic mode is not obviously questionable. This seminar will first analyze central texts on the Romantic concept of irony and then focus on Kierkegaard’s critique of irony in his thesis On the Concept of Irony (1841). Considering the novelistic situation in Either-Or (1843), the seminar will work out the development of an ethic philosophy of life that emerges when an aesthetic attitude is overcome. The seminar will close with Kierkegaard’s text Repetition (1843).
Grading based on: regular participation, presentation, discussion and essay.
