Aims, contents and method of the course

Social movements are considered as catalysts of social change. This seminar deals with social movements as policy actors in education and aims to analyze and compare the actors, agendas, strategies and medias as well as the effects of their actions on education policy and society from an international-comparative perspective. Central questions concern social movements and their efforts to resist inequality and injustice issues related to race, class and gender, but also to raise awareness on global challenges like climate change. The seminar will understand social movements as places of education that spur learning processes not only in and for society, but also within the movement. Using contemporary as well as historical case studies on student movements from Europe, the US and the Global South, theoretical-methodological tools for researching these movements will be learned and applied.

Inhaltliche Ziele:
1. Understand the function of social movements in political change and educational policy reform from an international-comparative perspective
2. Understand social movements as potential sites of education and for education
3. Critically analyze the ways in which education has been used as a medium and as an aim for social change
4. Understand the contested and complex character of education policy and reform
5. Critically analyze the role of students as agents of change in social movements
6. Critically distinguish between different theoretical-methodological approaches to examine social movements

Methodische Ziele
1. Reflectively read and discuss English-language seminar literature as well as to conduct independent literature research.
2. Critically examine and present a case studies of social movements and education on the basis of a specific theoretical-methodological approach.
3. Improved academic written skills through analysis of case studies.
4. Actively participate in class-discussions and pro-contra debates.

Methoden:
Group work, pro-contra debates, exercises and discussions.

Assessment and permitted materials

- Written presentation of paper idea: 30 credits
- Written feedback: 10 credits
- Course paper: 40 credits (the announced submission date is binding)
- Participation in discussion and other tasks: 20 credits.

60 credits and the submission of the course paper are needed to pass the course.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

-Mandatory attendance. Students may miss class twice in a term.
-The presentation is mandatory.
-Detailed feedback on one other presentation is mandatory (critical partnership)
-Course paper: To ensure scientific quality standards, the teacher may ask the student to attend an examination meeting upon their paper submission; this additional examination has to be assessed positively in order to pass the course.
