Aims, contents and method of the course

The course aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the qualitative research
methods used in social sciences and to convey the necessary skills required for their application. In this course, commonly qualitative research methods in education and social sciences will be covered and put into practice by small research projects carried out in groups of students. Hence students will both experience a research design with the help and guidance of the course director and try out qualitative research tools within the specified small projects.

Methods: Lectures (introduction of the theories and concepts by the course director), discussions, written and oral reflections on the readings, group work assignments, short presentations.

Assessment and permitted materials

In preparation for the sessions of the course, assignments and readings should be completed. A small qualitative research project will be conducted throughout the course. The final project report is a requirement. Short presentations on the research process will be made on several courses.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

• Reading the required texts, active presence, and participation in discussion in class; (20%)
• Finding a relevant research topic and designing a research outline for the application of the learned methods. (10%)
• Gathering and organizing data via qualitative methods (20%)
• Composing a final report (details of formatting will be introduced during the units) (50%)
