Aims, contents and method of the course

In contemporary discussions and elaborations on education, the political and social dimensions of these discourses are often ignored or silenced. Hence, to get an understanding of the intellectual history of education enhance critical engagement.

The aim of this course is to give an orientation on some historical, political and social ideas on how to organise and structure society/nation/ demos, and how these idea(l)s have bearings on the foundations of education.

The students acquire knowledge about the connection between socialization processes and social structures as well as competencies for identifying, analysing, and assessing educationally relevant social practices and educational intentions relevant to socialization in education and training.

Assessment and permitted materials

Mid-semester: mandatory, well-prepared oral presentation of a text to discuss with the seminar. This will account for 20% of the points that can be earned in the course (max. 4 points).
End-of-Semester: a written essay (5-6 pages) reflecting the knowledge and questions that are related to the topic of the course.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Total points: 20; minimum 11 points needed to pass the course.
18-20 = 1
16-17 = 2
14-15 = 3
11-13 = 4
0 - 10 = 5
Sufficient knowledge of English to read and understand some English texts and to follow the English-speaking course instructor.
