Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In the research field of parenting of people with learning difficulties/intellectual disabilities, the students can describe the connection between theoretical foundations from Dis/Ability Studies, positions from the self-advocacy movement, (particularly qualitative) methodological approaches and research ethical aspects as well as research results and to implement them in their own analyses.
After successful completion of the course, students can name and explain resources and barriers in relation to parenthood of people with learning difficulties in Austria and internationally. Students are able to discuss and critically analyse current research, discourses, practices and developments from a human rights perspective. They develop a comprehensive understanding of the relevance of disabilities, gender-specific ability expectations and socioeconomic factors, as well as their intersections, in the parenting role.

Contents:
Various aspects of parenting by people with learning difficulties/intellectual disabilities will be introduced and explored in depth through a human rights lens, drawing on, among other things, current research findings and the examination of relevant fields of pedagogical practice.
