Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The aim of this seminar is to familiarize students with current topics of research and debate in the field of Media Education. It also examines the approaches and methods of research used in the field for the (empirical) study of media-pedagogical research topics. Furthermore, it also examines approaches and methods which constitute a useful basis for the discussion and evaluation of media-pedagogical practice.
To this end, participants can test selected approaches and methods as they alternate between guided independent study and work in small groups. Students also discuss the theoretical basis of these approaches and methods as well as their merits and limitations in a plenum discussion. These discussions also include issues relating to concrete examples and practical research questions.
Participants may choose from a selection of proposed topics from the following specialisms or work with their own research questions:
a.) Media Pedagogical Research and Evaluation;
b.) Media (Literacy) Education Development and School Development;
c.) Media Education ('Learning with Media') and the evaluation of media projects in school, in child/youth work or in adult education ('Learning about Media');
d.) Designing/developing teaching media and (media-based or online) learning environments.

Assessment and permitted materials

- collaborative literature research and project planning;
- independent completion of a mini research project working in small groups (incl. keeping a research diary);
- presentation of the mini research project (small group work) with a plenum discussion and peer evaluation;
- accompanying term paper (setting out the theoretical basis of the project, discussing and describing the methods used, documenting results and providing a discussion and evaluation of the research methods).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The basic requirements for passing the course are regular attendance and active participation in the collaborative research and coursework components.
The seminar grade consists of the following three coursework elements: Completing a mini research project (33%), presenting it (33%) and writing an accompanying term paper (33%).

Examination topics

Students will be provided with the texts and materials they need to cover in the term paper during the online course; students will work on this material together in the seminar.
