This seminar will discuss a broad overview of tips and techniques for improving your scientific writing quality and efficiency in output. It is especially geared toward Master-level students planning to write or currently in the process of writing their theses. However, interested Ph.D. students are welcome. We will also devote one lecture to discussing tips for CVs and cover letters used for job applications.
Note: this class will involve two main parts: (1) scheduled lectures and group discussions/group work on scientific writing and students' own writing examples. (2) Students will also have the opportunity to schedule one-to-one meetings (June - September) with Dr. Pelowski to receive personal feedback on their own writing or thesis prep.Scheduled classes:Monday 3-7-2017: general overview of scientific writing in English

Aims, contents and method of the course
This seminar will discuss a broad overview of tips and techniques for improving your scientific writing quality and efficiency in output. It is especially geared toward Master-level students planning to write or currently in the process of writing their theses. However, interested Ph.D. students are welcome. We will also devote one lecture to discussing tips for CVs and cover letters used for job applications.Content: The seminar will consist of both lectures on the Intro and tips for scientific writing, as well as small group discussion and peer-feedback on student writing examples. We will also schedule individual 1h meeting times with Dr. Pelowski where students can receive feedback or ask questions about their personal writing examples.Methods: In-class group discussion, small group discussion and peer-feedback on student-provided writing examples.
Assessment and permitted materials
Active participation, group discussion and group work, peer-feedback.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Please be prepared to bring CVs, cover letters, and/or your own scientific writing (Masters theses in prep, journal papers) that you would like assistance with. If possible, please share them with Dr. Pelowski (by email or in person at room O2.50) before class start (until 30 June).Please also be prepared to bring questions or topics that you would like to discuss.Students should attend all lectures, participate in class discussion, and should be prepared to schedule/attend personal feedback session on their own writing.
