Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

At the end of this course, participants have learned to research, to structure and to write a literature review to a given topic. Optionally, participants are also able to formulate a research question of their own and an experimental design to tackle this question. The course is a preparation for conducting an empirical study in the next term.
The topics cover a large variety of research fields, such as:
- Attention in the new media (films, videos games)
- (Un)conscious manipulation of attention and behaviour
- Neural correlates of consciousness
- Cognition and language
- Chess and cognitive psychology
- Knowledge management: learning strategies and learning types
- Critical assessment of gender differences in experiments
- Attentional biases in eating disorders
- Cognitive deficits in ADHD / neurological patients
- Cognitions, anxiety disorder and depression
Participants are also allowed to propose their own research topics after consulting the lecturers.

Assessment and permitted materials

Regular attendance, participation in experiments, term paper, presentation, active participation, short exams

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

With simple standard methods of psychology, a circumscribed topic should be processed largely independently and scientifically based conclusions should be generated. These conclusions should be written down in adequate linguistic and formal terms. Competences in the field of organization of scientific work, time management, presentation of own ideas, and the handling of feedback are acquired by the participant. The goal of the course is to teach participants:
- Scientific working
- Critical assessment of literature
- Structure of a literature review
- Scientific writing
- Presentation of scientific results
