Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The aim of this seminar is to introduce students to the basics of scientific writing and scientific research. The content is organized in four blocks, reflecting the most important steps of scientific work:

I: Quality and ethics in social scientific research
At the beginning of the course we will take some time to explore the meaning, significance, and political challenges linked to 'science' in the context of social research. Students will be asked to write a reflection piece on their respective understanding of science.

II: Citations and scientific writing
The citation of existing knowledge sources is one of the fundamental principles for the development of a scientific argument. In this block students will learn and practice how to cite correctly when writing a scientific text.

III: Developing a case for research: literature reviews and research questions
In this block students will learn how to identify and review a strand of scientific literature related to a specific research topic of their interest. Students will also learn and practice how to abstract relevant research questions from the reviewed literature.

IV: Methodology and scientific concepts
The right choice of research methodology and scientific concepts is crucial for successfully conducting research. In this final block, students will learn about different types of political scientific research methods and how to apply them to their own research.

The seminar will be fully digital, meaning that no physical presence is required.
