Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Following an overview of the development and state of the art of current antisemitism research, this course is set to explore various historical, socio-psychological and politico-economic explanations for the persistence and transformations of the hatred against Jews. These theoretical tools will subsequently facilitate the analysis of present-day phenomena of Jew-hatred, such as left-wing extremist antisemitism, Islamist antisemitism, philosemitism, Holocaust denial, as well as counter-measures against antisemitism. Emphasis will be placed on the thorough understanding of knowledge production and different approaches in the field of antisemitism research. Moreover, this course seeks to raise awareness regarding the divisions between moralising, politicising, normative and empirical arguments.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
The core objective of this course is to help students contest conventional wisdom in antisemitism studies and to guide them through the challenges of a smaller independent research project. Course participants are encouraged to build and properly present their own evidence-based arguments instead of "hiding" behind other authors. Compulsory readings, weekly Moodle questions and brief introductory lectures by the course teacher are designed to stimulate debate. Although the essential texts are in English, reading knowledge of German is recommended.
