Aims, contents and method of the course

***Substantive focus: Comparative environmental politics***

The aim of this course is to introduce students to the main theoretical and empirical concepts of comparative politics. Most of the sessions will be connected to the main lecture (BAK7 VO). Some sessions will focus more specifically on comparative environmental politics, including topics around climate change, biodiversity and resource management.

Assessment and permitted materials

The overall assessment and grade are based on four components. All components have to be passed successfully in order to receive a passing grade overall. The four components are:
- Attendance, participation during class, one discussion lead (max. 25 points)
- Mid-term test (max. 25 points)
- Final paper [exact format to be determined] (max. 25 points)
- Final reflection on the course literature (max. 25 points)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Attendance is mandatory. Students are permitted to miss a maximum of two sessions per semester. If the class is conducted online due to COVID-19 restrictions, being marked as present requires the camera to be turned on.

Grade list:
100 - 87 points: Very Good (1)
86 - 75 points: Good (2)
74 - 63 points: Satisfactory (3)
62 - 50 points: Sufficient (4)
49 - 0 points: Fail (5)

The textbook for this course is: Caramani, D. (2020). Comparative politics (5th edn. Politics trove). Oxford: Oxford University Press. Access is provided via the University of Vienna Library.

In addition to chapters from the textbook, this course will include articles illustrating the respective week’s relevant concepts in practice. The reading list can be found in the syllabus.
