Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course provides an introduction into comparative politics in English. It will introduce students to theoretical and empirical concepts of comparative politics. The main aim of the course is to enable students to rely on these concepts to answer a research question of their choosing.
The lecture is a point of reference for this course. Accordingly, we will cover the following topics:
- Political epistemology
- Methods in Comparative Politics
- Regime types (democracies and autocracies)
- Democratic theory and types of democracies
- Parties and party systems
- Elections and electoral systems
- The Legislature
- The Executive
- The Judiciary
It is essential for this course that students read and understand the texts before the class starts in order to be able to have a proper discussion about them.

Assessment and permitted materials

- Attendance and class participation (15 % of the final mark)
- Submit three questions for the required readings five times during the seminar (25 % of the final mark)
- Written online test (30 % of the final mark)
- Research paper (30 % of the final mark): around 3500 words

Each component will be graded separately. The overall grade will be the weighted average of the grades from the four components, whereby it is not necessary that each of the components is successful. In other words, students are allowed to fail any of the four components and can still pass the class as long as the overall grade is at least 4.0. However, students have to submit at least something for every component.

Plagiarism and Ghostwriting are strictly forbidden. To make sure that these rules are not violated all written work will be crosschecked with a Plagiarism-software (Turnitin). In addition, on some occasions, students will be required to provide an oral discussion of their written work.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Please note that this course is held in English. Students must be able and willing to read and understand academic literature in English and also be able to follow and take part in a discussion in English. Students also have to submit their coursework in English.

Attendance is required in the first class and, overall, not more than two classes can be missed (‘prüfungsimmanente Lehrveranstaltung’).

Examination topics

The content of the seminar sessions and the literature.

Reading list

The syllabus (including a literature list) will be uploaded on Moodle.
