Aims, contents and method of the course

Reading Course 'International Politics'
Focus topic: 'International efforts for peacebuilding in times of multiple crises'

This reading course (LK) aims to introduce and elaborate theoretical, conceptual, terminological and methodological basics of the subject International Politics. In particular, the course serves to deepen, elaborate and discuss topics and texts dealt with in the lecture "Introduction to International Politics". The course offers students the opportunity to acquire knowledge about the theories, concepts, terms and methods of the subject International Politics and to deepen it through discussion and application. The summaries and short presentations of the texts as well as the general workshop character of this reading course serve this purpose. Methodologically, various interactive methods are used including group and plenary discussions. In particular, the practical relevance will be achieved through own research of current political events as well as through the visit of thematically relevant scientific events.

In addition to in-depth elaboration of the lecture's contents, the thematic focus will be on examining the role and contribution of international as well as national actors to the transformation of intra-state conflicts and peacebuilding in post-conflict societies - this especially against the background of the current multiple crises (COVID-19, climate, global economy, democracy, migration...). Initially, basic concepts, concepts and theories of conflict and peace research will be introduced and discussed by means of concrete examples. Building on this, we will turn to the study of strategies, practices and concepts of international actors in their efforts to constructively deal with armed conflicts. Particular reference will be made to the implementation of peace agreements and to approaches, methods and strategies of peace-building and conflict transformation. By means of selected case studies (Northern Ireland, Western Balkans, Middle East, South Africa...) the complex interaction of different actors and the multidimensional effects of peace processes in the context of current political developments (Brexit, EU rapprochement process of the Western Balkans, pandemic) will be analysed. Particular attention will be paid to possible causes of conflict and approaches to peacebuilding, conflict transformation and conflict resolution - especially from the perspective of ethnonational tensions, socio-economic deprivation, rival hegemonic interests and historical contextualisation. International experts from science and practice will also be invited to case discussions to provide insights into current developments and issues.

In addition, the basics of scientific work and methods of International Politics will also be discussed in the course, as well as possibly also questions on the preparation for the VO examination.

UPDATE !!! As indicated above, the course format and teaching method are related to the developments and possibilities under the Covid-19 regulations. Due to the current restrictions, it is anticipated that the course will - until further notice - have to take place online via webinar tools (Collaborate, BigBlueButton...) and Moodle e-learning (discussion forums, chats, assignments etc.). However, it is hoped that the situation will improve so that at least some course sessions can take place face to face with all participants in the classroom. Please note the special regulations available here: https://studieren.univie.ac.at/en/studying-exams/studying-on-site/.
You will also receive an e-mail in the second week of March with more detailed information about the procedure of the first classroom unit.
