Aims, contents and method of the course

Literature Course - International Politics with Focus on China

Contents of the course:

1. In direct connection to the IP lecture 2024S selected contents of IP literature will be deepened.

2. In addition to the IP lecture 2024S, students will be introduced to Chinese theories in the field of IR and their current implementation practice in International Organizations.

3. In the context of contemporary IR theories, students will be provided with corresponding insights into Chinese narratives.

Assessment and permitted materials

- study of selected literature ( posted on Moodle)
- participation in minimum 4 written mini-tests (multiple choice), 5 mini-test are held in the run of the course, electronic tools etc. are admitted
- optional participation in final test, no assisting tools are admitted
- Attendance required (no online classes)

Teaching methods:
- in-class presentation by the lecturer in combination with e-learning tools.
- in-depth IP reading: Discussion and review
- group exercises

Part I (March 6-20, 2023)

Advanced reading: 19th-20th century imperialism debate with focus on China, contemporary relevance of the Chinese narrative on Western imperialism (opium wars) and contemporary Western hegemonic geopolitics.

Part II (Apr 10 – May 22, 2023)

Advanced reading: neorealism (Mearsheimer, Ditzel), additional literature on H. Kissinger's China policy, the PR China concept of the "community of common destiny for mankind", theoretical approach and international projection, moral realism theory (Yan Xuetong)

- three written mini-tests

Part III (May 29 - June 26, 2023)

Advanced reading: climate governance (Aykut, Vogler), additional literature on China's role in the global climate crisis. Qin Yaqing, Relational Theory of World Politics; Zhao Tingyang, an idealistic approach to the classic Tianxia principle.
