Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Aristotle understood the relationship between domination and subordination as an essential aspect of politics. Man as a political being [zoon politikon] has the ability to rule and to be ruled. This view still shapes our understanding of politics today. Politics can be described as a network of rules that regulates the relationships between superiority and subordination, rulers and ruled. However, politics is not limited to the expression of such a network of rules. It is also an expression of power that is amorphous (Weber), shared by all (Arendt) and unfolds a form of productivity that belongs to no one and is never absent (Foucault). In this seminar, different conceptions of power and domination will be presented and discussed. The focus will be on canonical texts from the history of theory, but contemporary debates as well as non-canonical texts will also be discussed.
