Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This reading course discusses geopolitics from the perspective of the Global South. Additionally to the study of the classical key texts of geopolitics (Mackinder, Haushofer etc) we focus on topics relevant to the Global south: dependency, postcolonial and anti-colonial geopolitics, etc.
The course is a supplement to the lecture "Internationale Politik".

Assessment and permitted materials

Participation in class discussions, group presentation and an essay (min. 2500 words) - due four weeks after the last class session.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Grading Criteria:
Attendance & Participation in the discussion of the texts 20%
Summary and oral presentation of the course texts 20%
Research (Review) Essay 60%

Grading Scale:
1 = 87-100 % excellent (outstanding performance)
2 = 75-86 % good (generally good, but with some errors)
3 = 63-74 % satisfactory (generally sound work with a number of substantial errors)
4 = 50-62 % sufficient (performance meets the minimum criteria)
5 = 0 – 49 % unsatisfactory (< 50%; substantial improvement necessary; requirement of further work)

Class attendance is required (max. 2 absences).
